Halloween Counting Brew

Halloween Counting Brew

"Add three spiders to the brew." Kids love anything with a real cauldron and creepy little objects. This counting brew work practices the same skills as any counting activity (one-to-one correspondence and number recognition) with a Halloween theme that keeps them coming back to it all October.

What You'll Need

A small black cauldron or bucket. The Halloween buckets from the dollar store work well.

A set of numbered "Counting Brew" cards. Each card shows a number and which ingredient to add.

Halloween counting objects: plastic spiders, googly eyeballs, rubber worms, and any other small Halloween pieces you have.

How to Do the Activity

Spread the brew cards out on the mat. The child picks a card and reads it (or you read it to them), for example "5 spiders."

The child counts out that many spiders and drops them into the cauldron one at a time, counting out loud.

Keep going with the rest of the cards, adding the right number of each ingredient. At the end, they can look in the cauldron and count everything that went in.

Why This Activity Works

Dropping objects into a container holds their attention better than lining them up on a flat mat. They get a little clunk every time. The objects help too. Kids who walk right past the other counting works will stop at the cauldron.

It also works on numerals and number words at the same time. Children who can't read the numeral yet can count the pictures on the card. Children who can read it practice matching it to the amount they count out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the small Halloween objects?

Dollar stores, party supply stores, and Amazon all sell cheap bags of plastic spiders, eyeballs, and worms. Check the Halloween aisle starting in September. One small bag of each is plenty for this work.

What number range should the cards cover?

Cards for 1–10 work for most Pre-K and Kindergarten children. Adjust the top number for your group. Some kids will be ready for numbers up to 20 by late October.

Can I leave this on the shelf all of October?

Yes, it works well as an October shelf work. If interest drops, swap the objects (different spiders, colored eyeballs instead of plain) so it feels new without changing the activity.
