Fall Count and Clip Cards

Clip cards are one of the easiest math works to use in a classroom. They're self-correcting and reusable, and squeezing the clothespin builds the same pincer grip kids need for writing. With fall pictures like pumpkins, apples, scarecrows and hay bales, this counting work can stay on the shelf from September through November.
What You'll Need
A set of fall count and clip cards. Each card shows a different number of fall objects with three number choices along the bottom.
A small basket of wooden clothespins: one per child, or a few extra if several kids are working at once.
How to Do the Activity
The child picks a card, counts the objects, and clips a clothespin on the matching number.
Go through the cards one at a time. Some kids like to do them all and then check, and some check as they go. Either way is fine.
To make them self-checking, put a small dot on the back of each card behind the correct answer. The child flips the card over to see if the clip is in the right spot.
Classroom Tips
Keep the clothespins in a small basket next to the cards so kids can set up and clean up on their own.
If a child is still working on counting accurately, have them touch each object as they count (one touch for each number) instead of just looking over the picture.
These cards work as a transition activity, a morning work choice, or a small-group math rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What number range should I use?
Cards for 1–5 work for most Pre-K kids. Kindergartners can usually handle 1–10. With a mixed-age group, put out both sets and let kids choose.
What if a child keeps getting the wrong answer?
Watch how they count. The most common mistake at this age is counting something twice or skipping one. Practice one-to-one correspondence (one touch, one number) before going back to the clip cards.
Can I use these with a small group?
Yes. Give everyone in the group the same card at the same time, then talk about it: "How many did you count? Did anyone get a different number?" The talking is often just as useful as the counting.
